"A Society is Healthier if its
Markets are Free"
...so say ten new Koret Fellows
"I have not been so enthused about working with a new group of Koret Fellows since the program's inception," says Fellowship Program Director Zev Golan.
"That is not hyperbole," Golan explains. "I mean it. First, we have accepted nine new Fellows, and Sara Bernstein who has already begun her Fellowship this year. It is always exciting to begin working with new people, especially new students.
"Second, I cannot recall a group of individual Fellows as committed to free markets as this group. Finding several such people in a socialist educational system is rare; finding ten such people at once is exceptional.
"Third, the Fellows bring a wealth of knowledge and experience to the Program. Sima Mansano will contribute much regarding health policy. Koby Simana and Daniela Green have studied communications. Shmouel Maman and Yitzchak Sabato have law degrees. This is in addition to all the Fellows' backgrounds in economics. This is a strong group.
"Finally, and this is perhaps a subjective judgment, I believe this group of Fellows is not only professionally talented and dedicated, but it appears that as individuals they excel. They have character."
The current Fellowship year ended with the close of the Knesset and the academic year in July. The new Fellows met at
IASPS-Jerusalem on August 3 for orientation. They left with reams of reading material to prepare for the actual Fellowship Program which will begin in October. Professor Alvin Rabushka will fly to Jerusalem to open an intensive
two-month seminar at that time. Former IASPS Fellows, now Teaching Fellows, Ishai Ashlag, Bar Dadon and Amir Etzioni will teach at the seminar through the end of December. The Fellows will begin doing
hands-on policy research in the Knesset when the Knesset returns from its summer recess at the very end of October.
